Overview

## Origin Bi-Fold & French Doors: what you need to know

### What a bi-fold door is
A bi-fold door is a set of glazed panels that fold against each other and stack to one or both sides of the opening. Closed, it's a wall of glass. Open, it removes almost the whole wall between your room and the garden. We supply and fit bespoke aluminium bi-folds, including Origin, our best-selling range.

### Who it's for
Bi-folds suit families who use the garden in good weather and want the kitchen or living area to flow straight onto a patio. They're especially popular in new extensions and kitchen renovations, and in homes with a view worth opening up to.

### When to choose bi-folds
Bi-folds are the right choice when you want the widest possible clear opening. If you mostly want a big view and only open the doors occasionally, sliding doors may suit better, and we'll tell you honestly which works for your space.

### Why professional fitting matters
Bi-folds carry heavy glass panels on a track. If the frame isn't perfectly level and square, panels drag, seals fail and the doors become hard to open. Our fitters have 15 years' experience setting bi-fold frames so the panels glide and seal properly.

Accessories & options

## Make it yours
Origin offers a wide range of accessories and options with its doors. Here are the main choices we'll go through with you.

### Signature handles
Origin's Signature Knurled handle sits at the heart of a hardware range designed to match across their doors and windows. Several handle styles are available.

### Handle colours
Handles are available in a choice of finishes so they can match or contrast with your frame colour.

### Traffic door
A bi-fold can include a traffic door, a single leaf you open day to day without folding the whole set back.

### Threshold options
Choose from different threshold heights, including low threshold options for a near-level step between inside and out.

### Dual colour frames
Have one colour outside to suit the house and another inside to suit the room.

### Glazing choices
Clear, obscure and specialist glass options, chosen to suit privacy, sunlight and the room behind the door.

### Styles and grids
Plain Gallery glazing, steel-look Soho grids or Georgian bars, or a combination, to suit the age and style of your home.

### Seal and gasket colours
Even the gaskets come in colour options so the details look right up close.

### Configurations
Different panel numbers, opening directions and corner bi-fold layouts, planned around how you use the space.

The cost of waiting

## What happens if you leave it
A poorly chosen or badly fitted bi-fold is an expensive mistake to live with.

### Panels that drag or drop
An out-of-level threshold or frame leaves panels catching on the track. Over time it puts strain on rollers and hinges.

### Water at the threshold
Thresholds need correct drainage and sealing. Get it wrong and rain can track in at floor level.

### Draughts in winter
Misaligned panels don't compress their seals, so the room feels cold even with the doors shut.

### Common mistakes we see

- Picking too many panels, leaving lots of frame and less glass when closed.
- Forgetting a traffic door for everyday in-and-out use.
- Not planning the stacking side around furniture and the patio.
- Ordering before the opening is finished and properly measured.

Our process

## Five clear steps, start to finish

- 01

### Free written quote
Send us your plans or drawings and we give you a written quote setting out the product, the brand, the finish and the fitting. No pressure to decide on the spot.

- 02

### Free survey once you go ahead
When you accept your quote, we visit to take exact measurements and confirm every detail, at no cost.

- 03

### Order with a 65% deposit
Once you're happy, a 65% deposit places the order with the manufacturer. Your products are made to the exact measurements taken at survey.

- 04

### Installation by our fitting team
Our fitters remove the old frame, prepare the opening, install the new bi-fold doors, seal it and check it opens, closes and locks smoothly.

- 05

### Completion and handover
We tidy up, walk you through operation and care, and confirm the manufacturer's guarantee. The balance is due on the day of completion, and aftercare call-outs on doors we've fitted are free.

### Long-term guarantee
Choose Origin bi-folds and you get a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee.

### Low maintenance
No painting; powder-coated frames just need an occasional clean.

### Free aftercare
Aftercare call-outs on bi-folds we've fitted are free.

In detail

## Options, materials and methods
Everything worth knowing before your survey, so you can make a confident decision.

### Made in England, so turnaround is quick
Origin designs and manufactures its products in-house in England. Because they are made in the UK rather than shipped from abroad, we can offer quick turnaround times from order to fitting. We'll give you a realistic date with your quote.

### Truly bespoke
No two openings are the same. Every Origin product is made to the exact measurements taken at your survey, in your choice of colour, glazing, handles and configuration, so it fits the opening rather than the opening being forced to fit the product.

### Panel configurations
Bi-folds can be configured with panels folding all to one side, split to both sides, inward or outward. Common setups range from three panels on a smaller opening to six or more across a wide extension. We'll recommend a layout based on your opening width and how you use the space.

### Traffic doors
A traffic door is a single panel that opens like a normal door, so you can let the dog out without folding back the whole set. For most households it's the most-used part of the door, so it's worth planning where it sits.

### Thresholds
Thresholds range from standard weather-performance designs to lower options that sit closer to floor level. A lower threshold looks seamless but needs careful planning for drainage. We'll explain the trade-offs for your home.

### Bi-folds versus sliding doors
Bi-folds give a wider clear opening. Sliding doors give bigger panes of glass and fewer frame lines when closed. If you rarely open the doors fully, sliders often make more sense. We supply and fit both, so our advice isn't steered by what we sell.

### Extensions and renovations
In a new extension the opening can be built to suit the doors. In a renovation we may need to work with an existing opening or your builder may be widening one. Either way, final measurements are taken once the structure is ready.

### Smaller openings, big difference
Not every home has room for a wall of bi-folds. French doors make a real difference to smaller rooms: a dining room that opens onto a patio, a bedroom with a Juliet balcony, or a garden room. When both doors are open there's no central post in the way, so the opening feels larger than its size.

### Holding doors open
On exposed sites, doors left open can catch the wind. We'll talk through how the doors will be held open and how they'll be used day to day, so the hardware you choose suits the way your home works.

### Replacing timber French doors
Many of the French doors we replace are timber, swollen and hard to close after years of north coast weather. Swapping to aluminium removes the painting, the sticking and the rot, while keeping the same classic look. We remove the old doors, prepare the opening and fit the new frame, making good around it.

### Before your survey
To get the most from your survey, have a think about a few things beforehand: how you use the room day to day, the look you're aiming for, any colours or finishes you already like, and whether other building or decorating work is planned. Photos of styles you like are useful too. None of this is essential, as we'll guide you through every choice, but it helps us give you a precise origin bi-fold & french doors quote in a single visit.

### Paying for your project
We keep payment simple and transparent. A 65% deposit is taken to order your products from the manufacturer, and the balance is due on the day of completion, once the job is finished. We don't publish prices, because every home is different. Get in touch for a quote. Your written quote will show exactly what you're paying for.

### Choosing a brand
We supply and fit products from manufacturers rather than making our own, which means we can recommend what genuinely suits your home. Origin aluminium is our best seller and carries a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. RK Steel is our steel brand for internal doors, with a fire-rated option. For front doors we supply Bel'M and Palladio. At survey we'll explain the differences in plain terms.

### Understanding the guarantee
Because we don't manufacture, the guarantee on your product is the manufacturer's guarantee, and it varies by brand. Origin products carry a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. For other brands, we'll confirm the guarantee for your specific product in writing with your quote, so there are no surprises later.

### Getting an accurate quote
Every opening is different, so we don't publish prices. The fastest route to a firm figure is a free quote from your plans, followed by a free survey once you go ahead: we measure, check the condition of the opening and talk through the finish, glazing and hardware you want. You'll get a written quote listing exactly what's included before you decide anything.

### Homes we work on
Our customers are mainly households: replacements in existing homes, renovations, extensions and self-builds. P Black and Son supplies products from manufacturers and fits them, so you deal with one team from first visit to final handover.

Questions

## Origin Bi-Fold & French Doors FAQs
What is the difference between Contemporary and Soho?+Contemporary has plain glazing for an uninterrupted view. Soho adds steel-look grids for an industrial style. Both are Origin aluminium systems.

Can a bi-fold be made into French doors?+Yes. The models are very similar, so we can set the system up as French doors where that suits the opening better.

What guarantee comes with bi-fold doors?+The guarantee comes from the manufacturer. Origin bi-folds carry a 20-year manufacturer's guarantee. We'll confirm the guarantee for whichever bi-fold you choose when we quote.

How many panels do I need?+It depends on the opening width and the look you want. We'll recommend a layout with your quote and confirm it at survey once you accept.

Do bi-folds open inward or outward?+Either. Outward-opening is common because the panels don't take up room inside. We'll talk it through at survey.

Can you fit bi-folds into my existing opening?+Often, yes. We'll measure and advise whether the existing opening suits or needs adjusting by your builder.

How much does origin bi-fold & french doors cost?+Every job is priced individually because sizes, finishes and site conditions vary. Your written quote is free, the survey is free once you go ahead, and both come with no obligation, so you'll know the exact cost before you commit.

How does payment work?+A 65% deposit is taken to order your products, with the balance due on the day the job is completed.

How long does the whole process take?+Products are made to order after your deposit is placed. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your quote and agree a fitting date once your order is ready.

Do you offer an emergency service?+Call us on 028 7071 0015 and we'll tell you honestly how quickly we can help. If we fitted your door, aftercare call-outs are free.

Do you cover my area for origin bi-fold & french doors?+We're based in Coleraine and cover all of Northern Ireland, including the North Coast, Coleraine, Castlerock, Portrush, Portstewart, Ballymoney, Limavady, Ballymena, Ballycastle, Belfast and Lisburn: we work across Northern Ireland and occasionally further afield.

Can I visit your showroom?+Yes. Our showroom at 29 Altikeeragh Road, Coleraine is open by appointment only. Call us to arrange a time.
